MXOLISI WISEMAN NYAMBALI – THE CHRISTIAN SOLDIER
Evangelist, community-builder, spiritual leader ... these are some of the titles that have become synonymous with the name Mxolisi Wiseman Nyambali.
A soldier hailing from the vibrant Cape Town township of Khayelitsha, Mxolisi (40) started a church in the impoverished community of Wes Bank, 30km north-east of the city. It has become a healing centre, offers psychosocial support and uplifts people’s morals.
Today the church boosts a large congregation, who were often without hope due to poverty, unemployment and low levels of education.
The church – the only religious institution in the area – became a reality in December 2010, after Mxolisi visited Wes Bank and felt that he should do something for the community there.
Mxolisi, a married father of five, recalls having to drive to Wes Bank every day to meet with his congregation and attend to issues such as violence among couples, alcohol abuse, unemployment and poverty.
“It was not an easy thing to do – but as the days went by, we saw so many people coming to church with all sorts of problems. I’m happy now that they have finally met God and many of them have started realising that with God, nothing is impossible,” he says.
Mxolisi was nominated as a Brothers for Life 2011 Man of the Year by Wes Bank resident Khutala Mwanda, for the dedication and courage that he had showed her community
“I’m grateful that the Brothers for Life nomination is testament to what I have done in Wes Bank,” says Mxolisi.
