Mdaka was nominated as a Brothers for Life 2011 Man of the Year by his sister, who felt that he has made an enormous contribution not only to his family, but to his community. For example, today the Schoemansdal community enjoys recreational facilities that he helped to build through his Yebo Foundation.

“When I first saw the Brothers for Life advert it was during the World Cup, and I never thought that I would also be honoured as a Brother who has made a difference in someone’s life,” says Mbongeleni.”

At home, Mbongeleni is a devoted husband to his wife Andronicah, whom he married in 1987. He says he never misses an opportunity to be with his family after his demanding daily schedule.
