Boksburg Inmates are Brothers For Life

It was all applause at the Boksburg correctional centre on 31 March 2011 during the graduation ceremony hosted by Footballers For Life (F4L) to award certificates to inmates who want change in their lives.

Footballers For Life with funding from Unites States Agency for International Development, through Johns Hopkins Health and Education in South Africa, runs life skills training programme mostly targeting men in correctional facilities and use tools such as the Brothers For Life campaign to educate and conscientise the audience about lifestyles and the good values that men should live by .

The five month-long training which was facilitated by Silver Shabalala, F4L’s Head Coach saw 123 inmates taking part in discussions and activities that focussed on men as agents of change in issues such as violence, sexual offences and living responsibly.

Brothers for Life is a lifestyle communication effort that aims to create a movement of men that will ignite and spread throughout South Africa and raise awareness on issues such as HIV prevention, reduction of multiple concurrent partnerships, men’s health and gender-based violence.

Speaking at the ceremony, Area Commissioner, Dineo Mokgwetsi praised the inmates for their hardwork, and commitment to reshaping their lives.

Mokgwetsi noted the contribution that the Brothers For Life Assistant Coach Programme is helping, not only men in correctional centres but society at large.

“Brothers For Life has taught me a lot of things but mainly taking responsibility for my actions. I now know that the choices I make not only affect me but everyone around me, especially those who care deeply about me” said one inmate.

A highlight of the day was a play created by inmates to communicate and unpack the Brothers For Life themes covered in the training manual. The play features inmates who talk openly about how they have carried out the act and now understand the way it affects the victims, families and communities..
